Health & Safety

Alimos Marina, member of the ELLAKTOR Group, prioritizes health and safety aiming to ensure a stable, healthy and safe working environment. As summer draws people to beaches, marinas, and yachting holidays, which offer unique experiences, it is crucial to recognize the potential dangers associated with water activities, particularly drowning.

Drowning is a significant public health issue, especially among children and young people, thus it is essential to understand the risks in order to reduce drowning incidents. Here are some main points to take under consideration:

  • If caught in a current and being pulled into deep waters, swim parallel to the shoreline to free yourself, then swim perpendicular to return to the shore.
  • Take formal swimming lessons.
  • Always swim with a buddy and ideally under lifeguard supervision.
  • Children should always be supervised by an adult near water.
  • Wait at least 3 hours after eating before going swimming.
  • Avoid sudden entry and prolonged exposure to cold water.
  • Stay in shallow waters. Swim parallel to the shore.
  • Never exhaust your endurance limits.
  • Be cautious about where you dive. Do not put personal or others’ safety at risk.
  • If someone is in danger and you cannot help, alert the lifeguard.
  • Follow the safety regulations of the swimming facility or marina.
  • If visiting a swimming area for the first time, find out about potential local hazards from residents or marina staff.

Rescue and First Aid

  • Check for responsiveness.
  • Call emergency services at 112 or 166.
  • If the victim shows vital signs, place him/her in the recovery position. If there are no vital signs, perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Maintain the victim’s body temperature until emergency services arrive.
  • Psychological support may be needed to overcome the fear following the incident.
By adhering to these guidelines, individuals can enjoy water activities safely while minimizing the risk of drowning.
